High School Math and Web 2.0
Nov 23rd, 2008 by Mr. Higgins
My students in Pre-Calculus and Honors Algebra II have been doing great work on the class blogs. Their scribe posts and Student Focus assignments have made me smile, laugh, and feel a sense of pride that I hope all teachers feel someday. It is amazing the sense of pride and accomplishment that I feel AND it is obvious that the students care about their published work. Often, students will say something to me the next day, as if I have already checked over their entire post. I am hoping to have the honor of presenting the topic of Web 2.0 in the Mathematics Classroom in Ohio in the near future.

I have learned that it is best to delegate all of the responsibility to the students when it comes to daily notes. It is up to the student body to know how the scribe for the day is and if something goes wrong with the process, that it is everyone’s fault. I do not have a make a daily announcement, update a posting in the classroom, or remind people. Instead, I get the pleasure of reading and grading. OK, maybe grading isn’t a pleasure; however, it has to be done.
In recent classroom happening, my students fell in love with this video when we were studying the Quadratic Formula.

This blog is going to bat for Web 2.0. My name is Chris Higgins and I am a high school mathematics and computer science teacher at Norwalk High School in Ohio. I am a lifetime learner, Web 2.0 advocate, blogger, tennis coach, and a huge sports fan. Go Browns! Go Cavs! Go Tribe!
